Transforming is the ability of a student to change the orientation of texts or multimodal pieces into a different written or multimodal form, depending on what they are transforming obviously, and to also target a particular effect, purpose or audience.
In year 7 I have the students compressing the language in a text to produce a film and different types of poetry, also using poetry to produce a multimodal piece using images to convey the message.
In year 6 I have the students producing an informative text about an issue or a topic of interest and then they not only transform that into a literary text, but it must be for a younger audience also.
In year 5 I have the students transforming a poem into digital media.
In year 4 I have the students changing the story line of a text, including characters, plot, etc and then rewriting it, presenting it, recording it by video and editing.
In year 3 I have the students performing a number a transformations including a narrative to a poem, an information report into a presentation for an adult audience and a persuasive text written from both points of view (though this one is not really transformation, but it does make them change their orientation of thinking!)
I have had numerous requests to complete Years 8 and 9 and in my research I see that English delves further into these techniques by having the students create short fictions from information texts, producing photo stories from a literary text like Shakespeare and transforming scenes from a play or narrative into an email with a modern lilt.
English is not just about reading and writing, it's about understanding what an author is trying to achieve and how they are doing so. It is also about the ability of a person understand verbal and written work, transform it into a new form, possibly aimed at a different age group and achieve a response from an audience. Even better when the work is your own original piece and you can manipulate and change it, trying new styles and techniques.
